I've posted previously about the best Christmas movies out there...
I neglected two of themanfolk's favorites:
Die Hard
Die Hard 2
They really are Chrismas movies. We went and saw Die Hard on the big screen the week after Thanksgiving and it was an excellent way to kick off the season! So if you are looking for something a little different, give them a shot.
Or there is always Gremlins.

What is wrong with people?
What kind of asshole tells his kids that there is no Santa in the middle of a nasty divorce a week and a half before Christmas?
My brother in law.
Drops the bomb on them (they are 8 and 6) while christmas tree shopping and then leaves them at his mother's for the night to be handed off to their mother the next day.
WHAT. THE. FUCK.
Two kids, who have been through a whole lot this year and obviously need to have something good to believe in, completely crushed.
I want to kick him in the nuts.
He says his soon-to-be-ex is no good at being a mother, but this is world class shit parenting on his part. At least she (who is dealing with the immediate fall out) has been trying to help them and has reached out to me and my husband's mom to help repair what she can. In my opionin, she has done the best possible things she can for the kiddos (the young one is having a REALLY hard time with it) in the aftermath.
Seriously. Kick. In. Nuts.

The Angel Tree
I used to be a big proponent of the Salvation Army Angel Tree program.
Used to.
My office building is about a quarter of a mile away from the local SALVATION ARMY CHRISTMAS/DISASTER CENTER (doesn't that say something that those two are paired). Anyway, we get involved as a company in both donating and volunteering to help.
While volunteering a few years ago during family pick-up I was dismayed at what I saw... more than 50% of the people coming to pick up gifts for their "children in need" had cars that were either 1. worth more than mine or 2. the wheels they had on them were worth more than my car. When a mom with three "needy" kids gets out of her Escalade with her iPhone stuck to her ear and sparkly gold grille - you loose some faith.
The parents aren't needy... they fulfill their own needs first and then expect charity to take care of their kids. As a mom I just don't get it.
Or maybe the system is broken and it's too simple to get labeled as "needy"?
I dunno. I've stopped supporting the program until I figure it out. I'm not a Grinch, I'm just disappointed.

When I was little...
This used to be the longest day of the year. I remember running with my brothers trying to wear ourselves out so we'd want to go to sleep earlier, listening with them after lights out to see if we could hear Santa, watching the I Love Lucy marathon on regular TV (no cable back then) just to make the time pass faster. Happy memories from a great childhood.
In college that changed when my folks split and Christmas Eve became Christmas With Dad - so we now essentially get two Christmases. Very cool for a Christmas buff like me, and in years past the one at dad's could provide fodder for a very dysfunctional Christmas movie (think Griswold but drunker and with more random people around).
Still haven't lost my pre-Christmas excitement. Love the feeling, love the season.

Longest. Week. Ever.
Have I mentioned that I am no good at waiting?
Holy crap.
Christmas plus still waiting to hear on the house - we are supposed to close next Wednesday but we are waiting on the seller to make some final repairs.

Are we there yet?
Is it Christmas yet??
This has been the longest week on record. I think the company should have taken time off so everyone could mentally prepare themselves for the excitement.

Who is the authority here?
So as the holidays roll around and Christmas music permeates the air (LOVE) something bugs me. One particular song is thrown into the Christmas mix each year and I disagree with the fact that it is a Christmas song. Someone please explain?
My Favorite Things - as sung by Julie Andrews in Sound of Music (love that movie, have it on VHS)
Just because it mentions sleigh bells (which were most likely common in Austria at the time during the entire winter) doesn't make it a Christmas song. A winter song - yes. Christmas - notsomuch
Who decided it fits? I'd really like to debate this with them.

It's different on the big screen
We've discovered an old theater in our town that shows some of the all time great movies each Friday. We've been able to see Indiana Jones (the manfolk wore his hat), Jaws (for the fourth of July weekend) and a couple of others. We recently bought tickets to see Ghostbusters.
They just released their winter lineup --- CHRISTMAS MOVIES!
YEAH YEAH YEAH!

Don't judge me...
But I am sitting here listening to Christmas music.
It makes me happy.
Yeah Christmas! The temperatures have dipped below 100 - the first sign that fall is on the way. Fall, Football, Hockey, Christmas - happy!

Christmas Eve Eve
Woo hoo!
Beside being the best time of the year to be at work (no one is here, no meetings, very productive) they are letting us out early this year!
I have presents to wrap, dogs to wash, possibly some cookies to bake ...
All the wonderful things that make up the Christmas season.
Plus I'll be spending time with the manfolk and family.
Just. Awesome.

A Turtle Christmas
The manfolk sucks at keeping gifts until the day they are supposed to be given. Often it works out for me because he feels the need to go out and get another one to replace the one he couldn't wait to give so I have something for 'the day'.
Well... you know I love turtles, and you know I love Christmas. He managed to find a turtle Christmas t-shirt for me. I'm wearing it today because it just seemed fitting to get it to me before Christmas.
He's good.

Tis the Season
I love Christmas.
A lot.
It is my favorite time of the year. People are happier (unless you are in Walmart), it is fun to buy meaningful gifts for people, people generally are more giving (unless you are in Walmart), and the decorations make my heart happy.
Not really a religious person, but I think the holiday season is bigger than that. A little to commercial sometimes, but generally brings out the best in people (unless you are in Walmart or the mall parking lot).
